Life and culture in relation to flowers and plants

Flower admiration in Japan began with picking wildflowers. With the introduction of gardening techniques from China, the culture of growing beautiful flowers for enjoyment developed.
Cultural appreciation of flowers was only common among the privileged aristocratic class in the chaotic times preceding the politically stable Edo Era of the 17th to 19th centuries. As social mayhem subsided, the general public gained the freedom of time and resources to develop a deep admiration for flowers. Political unification gave birth to the development and popularization of Japanese floriculture. Japan's love of flowers continues to this day.

The Climate of Japan

Japanese flowers and plants are diverse because of geography and climate.

While a large part of Japan's climate is temperate, there is a range of regions from subtropical to subarctic. Annual rainfall also varies from 1,000 mm to 3,000 mm according to the region. These geographical and climatic characteristics contributes to the district seasons.

Introducing the latest
technology in Japan

SAKATA developed the World's First Pollen-
Free Lisianthus

It is generally said that when cut flowers get pollen on the pistils of the
flowers that have bloomed (pollination), the aging of the flower accelerates
and consequently the flower’s vase life shorten. The prominent Sunflowers,
due to their pollen, used to wilt quickly and to pollute the surroundings, so
they were not often used as cut flowers. However, SAKATA developed the
world's first Non-Pollen Sunflower in 1986, and its use has expanded since
then, making it an indispensable flower for cut flowers.
By being a leader in the world market of Lisianthus, SAKATA succeeded in
developing the world's first Pollen-Free Lisianthus, not after a long period of
trial and error. This Pollen-Free type Lisianthus has a longer vase life and does not pollute the surroundings or the flowers themselves with pollen. It also leads to SDGs initiatives such as reducing losses at flower shops.
SAKATA will carry on introducing various types of Pollen-Free Lisianthus to the market, and will continue attracting attention as an initiator to expanding the flower market with innovative technology.

Master gardeners form the shaped trees of Japanese gardens to appear as if they aged in a wild, natural environment. In order to give the trees their shape, the branches and trunk roots of the trees are manipulated from the seedling stage, regularly pruned and protected from insects.
